Mrs Jago and I are really looking forward to getting to know you and welcoming your children into the wonderful world of Year 1.

To make sure that your child’s transition from Year R to Year 1 is a smooth one, we are offering a creative, play based curriculum in year 1, where all children can access learning experiences which appeal to them. As your child enters their new classroom on Monday, they will be greeted by a familiar environment to the one they experienced in Reception. The classroom is organised so that there is space for construction, role-play, creative experiences, exploration, and investigation. Our aim is to deliver the Year 1 curriculum by planning activities based around a core text and to set up indoor and outdoor learning environments that provide stimulating challenges which enable the children to make rapid progress in their learning and development.  We are keen to promote warm, positive relationships with the children within a culture of high expectations for all.

They will be discrete times each day for teaching the core subjects of English and Mathematics as well as Letters & Sounds but the children will also have access to a range of independent activities to write for a range of purposes, as well as to explore cross-curricular learning. Specific skills and knowledge will be taught in a mixture of whole-class, small group, and individual sessions.

We will aim to keep our class gallery updated with photos of our activities and our classroom environment. Please do look in the ‘This week in School’ tab to see an outline of what we are doing each week.

On a Monday afternoon it is my PPA time, so Mrs West will cover the class and deliver Art and D.T. lessons to the children. The children will also receive a Spanish lesson taught by Mrs Taylor every Tuesday. Mrs Willis will continue to deliver phonics sessions to Purple class, as well as myself and Mrs Jago.

We will be greeting the children on the gate each day, so if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask. You can also email me Y1@ethelbert-road.kent.sch.uk. I will check my emails daily and get back to you as soon as possible.

I am really looking forward to getting to know you all.

Best wishes,

Mrs Haylor
