Science

Today we are going to be carrying on with our science topic ‘Animals including Humans.’ Today we are thinking about the diet of animals.

Have a look at the video on the link below to start thinking about why animals might need different foods to stay healthy.

Have a look at the link below to find out more about what types of food different animals eat and how we can use this information to categorise (sort into groups) animals.

Take a look at the documents below, can you sort the animals into the venn diagram of carnivores (only eat meat), herbivores (only eat plants) and omnivores (eat both meat and plants)? A trick to help you remember what omnivores eat is that the prefix omni- means all, so and omnivore eats ‘all’ types of food (they eat both meat and plants not necessarily all meats and all plants!).

Have a look at the PowerPoint below to find out more about why different animals eat different types of food.

If you would like to carry on learning about animals and their diets, can you research an animal of your choosing and find out:

  • Are they an omnivore, herbivore or carnivore?
  • What specific food do they eat?
  • Why do they eat this/ what nutrients does it give them?
