Spellings

Children all learn differently and there is no ONE perfect method for learning spellings! Some like the Look Say Cover Write Check method and you could give this a try at home.

For checking on Monday 20th January:

This week, our spellings have no common spelling pattern. They are a selection of challenging words from the Year 3/4 Statutory Spelling list. Please practise these lots before Monday's test so that you can do your best in our test!

  • appear
  • arrive
  • believe
  • breath
  • continue
  • describe
  • group
  • height
  • often
  • women

For checking on Monday 13th January:

For our first spelling test of 2025, we are looking at root words ending with either -ic or -al.

  • basically
  • frantically
  • dramatically
  • magically
  • tragically
  • comically

  • actually
  • accidentally
  • occasionally
  • eventually

For checking on Monday 2nd December:

We are, once again, creating adverbs using the suffix -ly. This week, we removed the -le from the root word before adding the suffix.

  • gently
  • simply
  • humbly
  • nobly
  • horribly
  • terribly
  • possibly
  • incredibly
  • comfortably
  • probably

For checking on Monday 25th November:

We are continuing to create adverbs using the suffix -ly. This week, the root word has more than one syllable and already ends with -y. To make the adverb, the -y is replaced with an -i before the suffix -ly is added.

  • happily
  • angrily
  • lazily
  • easily
  • busily
  • greedily
  • messily
  • wearily
  • cheekily
  • clumsily

For checking on Monday 18th November:

For the remainder of the term, we will be creating adverbs using the suffix -ly. This week, there is no change to the root word to do so.

  • kindly
  • quickly
  • safely
  • rudely
  • sweetly
  • strongly
  • bravely
  • firstly
  • finally
  • usually

For checking after the holidays on Monday 4th November:

We are increasing to 10 spellings after the half term (unless I have discussed with you otherwise). For the next two weeks, we will be learning homophones and near homophones.

  • here
  • hear
  • heel
  • heal
  • main
  • mane
  • mail
