Phonics Check
The Year 1 Phonics Screening Check is an informal test that takes place in June for all children in Year 1 at primary school. The check is designed to assess a child's ability to decode words using phonics.
What happens during the check?
- Children read a list of 40 words, including real words and made-up words
- The check is designed to be fun and not stressful
- Children are encouraged to use their phonics to sound out the words
What are the results used for?
- The results help teachers inform their teaching
- The results are used to identify children who may need additional support
- The government uses the results to compare schools and create league tables
What happens if a child doesn't meet the expected standard?
- Children who don't meet the expected standard are tested again in Year 2
- They may also receive additional support
