Phonic Check
The phonics screening check is a short assessment that tests a child's ability to decode words using phonics. Children in year 2 who do not meet the expected standard in the year 1 screening check must take the check again in year 2.
What happens during the check?
- Children read 40 words to a teacher one-on-one
- The check is usually taken in a quiet area of the school
- There is no time limit, but it usually takes 4–9 minutes per child
- The check includes real words and some pseudo-words, also known as alien words
Who needs to take the check?
- Children who are 7 years old by the end of the academic year and have not taken the check before
- Children who did not meet the expected standard in the previous year's check
What is the pass mark?
- The pass mark is 32 correct answers out of 40
How can children prepare for the check?
- Use practice lists and worksheets
- Use flashcards with real words and alien nonsense words
- Use programs that teach phonics using color-coding and monster sounds
