  • Languages Day

Every September, the whole school celebrates Languages Day to coincide with European Languages Day, an annual celebration which has been marked throughout Europe since 2001.  It is a wonderful opportunity to show our appreciation for multiculturalism, community and diversity, not just within our school but also throughout the wider world.

In 2025, we began the day with an assembly, finding out about why learning languages is fun and useful.  We also enjoyed discovering about the talented pupils in our school who speak another language at home - impressive! We then divided into mixed-age groups for the rest of the day and completed six different language workshops kindly led by parents and staff.  This year we learnt about French, German, Irish, Dutch, Brazilian Portuguese and Japanese.  Each workshop sparked our curiosity with fun facts about the countries, people and traditions connected to each language.

In the French workshop, we imagined ourselves in a café and practised ordering (and tasting!) croissants and counting out our euros as payment.

In German, we played a charades game to learn words that look and sound very similar to English words.

In Irish, we learnt some greetings phrases and had a go at some traditional Irish dancing.

In Dutch, we had fun discovering some funny words, learning why the colour orange is so significant and making delicious "sprinkle bread"!

In Brazilian Portuguese, we practised some capoeira moves and learnt some interesting facts about Brazil.

In Japanese, we explored a few aspects of their fascinating culture and had a go at writing Japanese numbers.

Hello to all the children of the world
