    The phonics screening check is a short assessment that tests a child's ability to decode words using phonics. Children in  Year 2 who do not meet the expected standard in the Year 1 screening check must take the check again in Year 2 (during the week beg. Mon. 8th June 2026). 

    What happens during the check?

    • Children read 40 words to a teacher one-on-one 
    • The check is usually taken in a quiet area of the school 
    • There is no time limit, but it usually takes 4–9 minutes per child 
    • The check includes real words and some pseudo-words, also known as alien words 

     

    Who needs to take the check? 

    • Children who are 7 years old by the end of the academic year and have not taken the check before
    • Children who did not meet the expected standard in the previous year's check

     

    What is the pass mark? 

    • The pass mark is 32 correct answers out of 40

     

    How can children prepare for the check? 

    • Use practice lists and worksheets
    • Use flashcards with real words and alien nonsense words
    • Use programs that teach phonics using color-coding and monster sounds
