Good luck with your onward language-learning journey at your chosen secondary school.
Top tips from Señora Salt:
- Don't worry if you're assigned a language that you haven't learnt before. Everything you've picked up from your Spanish learning will be really useful for any language. It can be fascinating to spot the similarities and differences between them. Plus, being multilingual is very impressive!
- "Little and often" is key to successful language learning. Learn the topic vocabulary and grammar as it is set so that you build up a brilliant bank of words that you can use for all topics. Keep looking back at your notes to help it to really "stick".
- Listen to the programmes that you love in the target language - you can add subtitles in English. Netflix, Amazon, Disney etc all have this feature... By doing this you will accustom yourself to hearing a foreign language and build up some new words too.
- Get a good dictionary in the language - REMEMBER...DO NOT TRUST GOOGLE TRANSLATE! A suggested dictionary for language learning would be a "Collins Easy Learning Dictionary".
- http://www.wordreference.com is a great online dictionary if you don't have a hard copy.
- Be curious and don't worry about being perfect. Languages are about trying things out. None of us get it right the first time! Your teachers will expect you to make mistakes; that's how we learn.
- ENJOY! Use apps such as Duolingo or BBC Bitesize to help make your learning fun - even 5 minutes of games a day will help keep that vocabulary and grammar flowing!
- Languages open so many doors for you, not just for travelling around the world but also for reaching some top jobs. You will also be able to make international friends and learn how to empathise and communicate in the wider world.
