Light

This week, we are going to think about the importance of light when growing plants.  Seeds and bulbs need water, but most do not need light to grow.  We know this, because seeds and bulbs start to grow when they are underground.  However, what happens when the seeds germinate and start to grow shoots, stems and leaves?

I have been growing basil.  Here's what I gave the 2 pots of basil:

  • the same type and amount of soil
  • the same amount of water
  • leave one on a windowsill
  • put one in a dark cupboard

What do you notice about my two pots of basil?  Are there any differences between the leaves? Can you draw two pictures, labelling the differences? Can you try this experiment at home?

Note: I am thrilled with all of the growing that you are all doing at home.  This is the best way to learn about growing plants - by actually growing them, looking after them and watching them change.

Which pot of basil was left in the cupboard? What differences can you see when you OBSERVE and COMPARE the two plants?
